Over the past six months, discussions about AI-assisted programming have been trending. I frequently see various “miracles” on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) – claims like “launching an AI product in one hour without coding experience” or “automatically generating a webpage with a single click.” While these demonstrations look impressive, how magical are they in reality?
Having personally tested and experienced various AI programming tools over the past few months – including Lovaable, Cursor, and Bolt – I want to share my insights as a reference.
First, addressing the coding fundamentals question many care about: While I learned basic programming (C++) in college, this provides limited help for modern frontend development. However, the underlying logical thinking in programming remains transferable.
So, to answer the first question: Can someone with no coding background use AI programming to create a web-based application?
The answer is yes, but it’s tricky – depending on how we define “someone with no coding background.” True “no coding background” would imply no understanding of modern computing fundamentals, networks, or basic logic. Yet these concepts are covered in basic education worldwide: simple calculations in math, logic gates in physics, or basic internet concepts in IT/history classes. If someone completely lacks this foundational knowledge, the answer becomes no.
Therefore, if you’re a modern individual with basic education, willing to learn and curious, you absolutely can create an application without advanced programming experience (to some extent, mathematics itself is a form of programming).
For those with some coding experience or professional developers, AI programming can significantly improve efficiency in repetitive tasks. However, the actual productivity boost isn’t as exaggerated as advertised. I’ll elaborate on this later. Yes, I did build a webpage from scratch using AI, undergoing multiple rounds of debugging and reconstruction. It’s this authentic experience I want to share.
